ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI FEAST DAY CELEBRATION

“Go, and rebuild my church which is broken”  - Words to St. Francis in a vision that radically changed his life.

We, here at St Francis of Assisi parish in Brooklyn, celebrated our Feast in the footsteps of St. Francis with a Triduum of Prayers on Monday 1st to Wednesday 3rd October 2018.  On Thursday 4th, our Feast Day,animals were blessed at the entrance of the church by Fr. Dumont and Fr. Ruiz.

That evening, a spirited Mass was celebrated in three languages followed by a social in grand style with lots of food, desserts, drinks and of course a beautiful cake. Can’t have a celebration without a cake!

Our Triduum started with the Rosary followed by praise and worship songs to warm our spirits.

There were meditations on several themes related to Francis’ spiritual journey. But more importantly, we were encouraged to contemplate on how they could impact our lives towards spiritual growth and change.

Francis’ treasure here on earth was Jesus in the Sacrament of the Altar.  He was a peacemaker and committed his life to serving God and the poor. He also had a special devotion to the Pater  Noster (the Our Father) and to Mary the Mother of God. He believed that Life in Christ is exciting, dangerous and joyful.

Some quotes attributed to St. Francis:

It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching.

Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.

If God can work through me, He can work through anyone.

One question for us after this week of celebration is:  How am I living my life?
